Rare details uncovered in Newcastle’s photo archives

Rare details from thousands of historic Newcastle photographs are being uncovered for the first time, following a five-year digitisation project led by City of Newcastle (CN).

More than 5,500 glass plate negatives taken by pioneering local lensman Ralph Snowball have been scanned, catalogued and uploaded online.

Enhanced imaging also revealed fine particulars such as building signage, gravestone inscriptions and street-level activity that were not previously visible.

Council’s director of museum, archive, libraries and learning Julie Baird said the improved clarity was transforming how the collection was used.

“Improved imaging is revealing remarkable new details,” she explained.

“This project ensures the collection remains a living resource, continuing to deepen our understanding of Newcastle’s history.”

The project began in 2021, with library staff and volunteers working in the digitisation lab at Newcastle City Library to preserve and catalogue the collection.

They also helped update historical records linked to individual images.

Ms Baird said the work ensured the archive remained relevant for future generations.

“This work makes our shared history more accessible, allowing more people to connect with Newcastle’s past and see how our city has evolved,” she added.

“This is helping researchers; historians and the community better understand the people and places captured in these photographs.”

The photos, taken between the 1890s and 1920s, capture everyday life across Newcastle and the Hunter, such as civic buildings and major infrastructure projects.

Images include surf lifesavers at Newcastle Beach, workers at the Obelisk, the construction of the Newcastle Ocean Baths, and landmarks such as Christ Church Cathedral and the Newcastle Post Office.

The Snowball Collection was originally discovered in 1988 in the basement of the photographer’s former Lambton home and is now the largest photographic archive held by Newcastle Libraries.

Mr Snowball, a former miner who documented Newcastle life across the late 19th and early 20th century, also served as New Lambton’s first town clerk.

A free public event, Celebrating Snowball, is slated to take place at Newcastle City Library on Wednesday 13 May from 6pm to 7pm, showcasing highlights from the collection.
