Darby Street Location
Darby Street in Cooks Hill is located just outside of the city centre of Newcastle. A four-minute drive by car, or an easy 1.5km flat stroll.
With its rich heritage of terrace houses, Cooks Hill flourished from the local coal mines in the area.
It was originally named Lake Macquarie Road, but later changed to Darby Street. Land sales developed from Brooks Street, Cooks Hills onto Darby Street to create the commercial centre standing proudly here today.
Historical significance
Darby Street is part of the City of Newcastle Cooks Hill Heritage Conservation Area, with the council describing the statement of significance:
“Cooks Hill Heritage Conservation Area is culturally significant on a number of levels. As a residential and commercial precinct it is regarded for its special historical character, liveable streetscapes, diverse range of historic residential and commercial buildings and several tree lined streets. The age of the suburb, relative to other suburbs of Newcastle, is apparent in the style and form of buildings and eclectic street layout.”
