A cyclist will enter the New Year a bit sore and sorry after crashing his mountain bike at Merewether on Friday morning.

About 9.55am on 31 December, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews helped rescue the injured man following a fall in the Glenrock State Conservation Area near Scenic Drive.

The bike rider suffered a broken rib and fractured his right leg.

NSW Ambulance paramedics stabilised the patient.

They then placed a splint on his injured leg.

Fire crews then used what’s called a “Mule”, a stretcher on large wheels, to transport the cyclist through bushland to a waiting ambulance.

He was treated by paramedics and transported to hospital.

FRNSW Acting Superintendent Tim Hassiotis said the incident was a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) when you are involved in, or see a crash, could be the difference between life and death.

“The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you,” he explained.

“It should be used to contact police, fire or ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.”
