It’s hard to go wrong with a Roald Dahl classic.
These April school holidays, you can catch Hunter Drama’s production of the 1970 title Fantastic Mr Fox at the Civic Playhouse.
With famous flourish, a vaguely criminal team of stooge farmers – “Boggis and Bunce and Bean: one fat, one short and one lean” – wage a war on a cunning band of frenzied foxes.
Whatever their prowess as poultry farmers, the farmers’ sole objective is the extermination of the story’s hero: the noble, the clever, the Fantastic Mr Fox.
Outwitted at every turn, the farmers’ ploys backfire, for Mr Fox devises a plan that will ensure full stomachs for not only his family, but all his friends, who celebrate with a sumptuous feast.
Hunter Drama is renowned for presenting Dahl’s most-loved characters on stage and now, following last year’s hit production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, under the direction of Hunter Drama founder Daniel Stoddart, the Civic Playhouse stage will be transformed into the den and tunnels where Mr Fox keeps his family one step ahead of those dreadful farmers – complete with a 70s disco soundtrack and a modern twist.
“I’ve had great success combining Dahl’s most-loved stories with young performers, and this version of Fantastic Mr Fox will not be like any version you would have seen before,” Stoddart said.
The adventure starts on Wednesday 24 April.
