Croquet champions come to the fore post COVID-19

SHARE

Following a wretched 2020, sportsmen and women are starting to return to a bit of normality.

And, it’s certainly the case for members of the Toronto Croquet Club.

The organisation recently hosted its singles championships – one of the first major competitions to take place post COVID-19.

“Many of us were keen to get out and test our on-court skills,” publicity officer Liz McDonald said.

“Thankfully, the weather was magnificent.

“The action, over four days, featured some very closely-contested battles, too.

“All up, it was an outstanding success.”

Four divisions – based on handicaps – kept the players enthralled right up until the finals.

In the open section, Greg Burnes held Chris Williamson at bay to secure the crown.

Bruce Glasgow then prevailed in the gold category, edging out an unfortunate Williamson again.

Ted Lynge captured the silver title from runner-up Jim Houston.

Bronze, which boasted the biggest number of competitors, saw Sue Sellers reap the spoils ahead of Phil McDonald.
