A critical incident investigation is underway following the death of a man in Merewether at the weekend.
Emergency services were called to a unit on Ocean Street about 9.35am on Sunday 12 April following reports of a concern for welfare.
However, they were unable to contact the occupant.
As a result, officers attached to Newcastle City Police District started inquiries.
They then reattended the apartment on Tuesday 14 April and found a 46-year-old man deceased inside the property.
A crime scene has been established, with a Critical Incident Team from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
Meanwhile, a report is being prepared for the information of the Coroner.
