Cricket legend Shane Watson searching for stars in Newcastle

After COVID-19 impacted last season’s plans, the ever-popular Shaun Brown Cricket Coaching NSW Clinics will return in 2022 with Australian legend Shane Watson.

Thanks to T20 Stars Cricket Equipment, the former NSW and Sydney Thunder all-rounder is set to inspire the next generation of Newcastle talent this summer.

He’ll head up the program, alongside ex-national and state paceman Doug Bollinger.

“It’s fantastic to have a recent Aussie star like Shane traveling to the regional areas,” Brown said.

“It rounds out a superb [coaching] panel in NSW.”

Australian cricket legend Shane Watson.

Watson played 59 Tests for Australia and 190 ODIs.

A dashing opener and fast-medium swing bowler, he made his mark on the international scene between 2002 and 2016.

He was also the world No. 1 T20 all-rounder for three years, including an all-time record of 120 consecutive weeks (13 October 2011 – 30 January 2014).

“I’m really looking forward to coaching in Newcastle,” said Watson, the last player to retire from Australia’s golden era of the early 2000s.

“It’ll be great to work with young talent of the regional areas.”

The camp will take place on 20 and 21 January, from 9am to 3pm each day.

“The clinics provide an excellent learning experience for enthusiastic cricketers between the ages of 7 to 16,” Brown said.

“Our program covers all facets of cricket – Twenty20, One Day and Test formats.

“They’re all aimed at improving participant’s skills, knowledge and enjoyment of the game.”

Over the past 36 years, thousands of youngsters have improved their talents in all aspects of cricket at the regional camps.

“It’s fantastic to be able to involve former Test stars in areas that normally don’t get that exposure,” said Brown, a professional coach since 1986, who himself grew up playing junior cricket in regional areas.

The clinic features the use of video analysis, a comprehensive program and written reports for all who attend this summer.

Watson will also have a full selection of his T20 Stars gear for juniors at his pop-up store, which will feature in Newcastle this year.
