Mental health advocate Craig Hamilton claimed the top gong at the prestigious Newcastle Business Club (NBC) Annual Awards.
The former ABC journalist, who released the documentary The Promise with local filmmaker Jye Currie to critical acclaim, took out the individual honours at the non-profit’s September luncheon at the Earp Distilling Co.
Also recognised for their input to the city and the Hunter were Abbey McDonnell (Youth Award – under-35) and BU Happiness College (Organisation Award).
Each was presented with a framed image of The Summerhouse by Hilda Rix-Nicholas.
NBC president Rob Dawson expressed his delight at the quality of the recipients in 2024.
“This year’s award winners exemplify the spirit of excellence and community service that our club seeks to honour,” he said.
“Their contributions have made a significant impact on Newcastle and the region… and we are proud to acknowledge their achievements.
“In 1975, under the presidency of David Le Marchant and with the assistance of John McNaughton and Cliff McDonald, the Newcastle Business Club initiated the Annual Awards.
“So, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and finalists and look forward to continuing this tradition of celebrating excellence in the Hunter.”
Newcastle Business Club Annual Awards winners
Individual Award: Craig Hamilton
Craig Hamilton was presented the Newcastle Business Club 2024 Individual Award for his extraordinary contributions to mental health advocacy in Newcastle and beyond.
Through his powerful storytelling and public speaking, he has significantly raised awareness about mental health issues, particularly the stigma surrounding them.
His personal experience with bipolar disorder, openly shared in his book Broken Open and numerous keynote speeches and workshops, inspired countless individuals to seek help and speak openly about their struggles.
Craig’s efforts have not only empowered people but also influenced workplace policies and community discussions, fostering a more supportive and understanding environment for those dealing with mental health challenges.
His commitment to this cause and his impact on both local and national levels make him a truly deserving recipient of this award.
Youth Award (Under 35): Abbey McDonnell
Abbey McDonell was honoured with the Newcastle Business Club 2024 Youth Award for her significant contributions as a young leader in the Newcastle community.
As the general manager of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF), she’s driven innovative programs and expanded volunteer initiatives that have directly benefited breast cancer patients and their families.
Her efforts in engaging and empowering young volunteers have fostered a renewed sense of community service among Newcastle’s youth.
Additionally, Abbey’s successful fundraising efforts have greatly increased HBCF’s capacity to provide critical services.
Her dedication to both professional and volunteer work, her passion for breast cancer advocacy, and her ability to inspire others have made her a standout candidate for this award.
Organisation Award: BU Happiness College
BU Happiness College is recognised with the Newcastle Business Club 2024 Organisation Award for its outstanding dedication to improving the mental health and wellbeing of Newcastle’s community.
The organisation demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting workplace happiness and mental health education, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
By partnering with local entities like Newcastle Libraries and supporting large and small businesses to enhance their workplace culture, BU Happiness College has played a pivotal role in fostering happier, more supportive work environments.
Their commitment to collaboration over competition and their efforts in making Newcastle a leader in workplace wellness and community happiness are what make them so deserving of this award.
