COVID-19 transmission still high in HNELHD with 61 new infections

COVID-19 is continuing to spread in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) after 61 new cases were detected overnight.

Of the detections, 29 were infectious in the community and 33 are linked to known exposures or clusters.

The region has been urged by health officials to come forward for testing and vaccination.

The Newcastle LGA added the most cases with 17 across Mayfield (three), Wallsend (two), Adamstown, Carrington, Fletcher, Hamilton South, Maryland, Mayfield West, Merewether, New Lambton, North Lambton, Tarro, Tighes Hill and Waratah West.

Ten were found in Lake Macquarie at Belmont North (two), Belmont, Bolton Point, Cardiff, Cardiff Heights, Gateshead, Macquarie Hills, Whitebridge and Windale.

Cessnock detected seven in Cessnock (two), Abermain, Cliftleigh, Ellalong, Kearsley and Kurri Kurri while Maitland recorded six in Gillieston Heights (two), East Maitland, Rutherford, Telarah and Thornton.

The Singleton LGA found three cases in Singleton and Singleton Heights while Dungog registered one in Vacy.

Port Stephens also made the list with two in Raymond Terrace, and one each in Brandy Hill and Medowie.

The Mid Coast LGA (nine) and Tamworth (four) make up the remaining 13 cases.

In the district there are 963 active cases with 21 in hospital. Four are in intensive care.

NSW, as a whole, reported 345 new cases and five deaths – three women and two men.

One person was in their 30s, one was in their 50s, another was in their 70s, one person was in their 80s, and one person was in their 90s.

One was not vaccinated, two had received one dose, and two had received two doses.
