COVID-19 isolation rules scrapped

SHARE

Australians infected with COVID-19 will no longer need to isolate from 14 October.

The changes come after Federal Cabinet agreed to scrap all current regulations when it met on Friday.

The need to self-isolate for five days after a positive test will no longer apply.

Mandatory masks, vaccine mandates and rules surrounding household contacts will all be abolished in a bid to return the country to ‘normal’ life.

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said the pandemic that had plagued the nation for the past two years should be managed like other transmittable diseases.

“The new COVID-19 settings are part of our staged plan to manage COVID-19 in a similar way to other infectious diseases like influenza,” she said.

The scrapping of self-isolation rules also mean workers quarantining will not receive pandemic leave from 14 October.

Vaccine mandates will also no longer apply to people who work in aged care facilities or disability care.

The move follows changes to the reporting of community infection numbers from daily to weekly, which came into affect on September 9.

The news that masks are no longer required on public transport and in taxis and rideshares, was introduced in NSW last week.

NSW COVID-19 cases

For the week ending 24 September 2022, there were 276 people with COVID-19 admitted to hospital and 34 people admitted to ICU in NSW.

There were 67 COVID-19 deaths reported this week.

Of these, 22 (33%) had not received three doses of vaccine. Seven deaths were in people aged under 65 years.
