COVID-19 cases remain high in HNELHD with 41 new infections

COVID-19 cases remain high in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) with a further 41 new infections registered overnight.

It follows a recent record of 45, the previous day, on Wednesday 22 September.

It now takes the outbreak figure in the HNELHD to 562, with 347 active.

Twenty-six cases are from the Lake Macquarie LGA – four in Toronto; three in Cardiff and Mount Hutton; two in Blackalls Park, Booragul, Macquarie Hills, Mirrabooka and Warners Bay; with one each in Arcadia Vale, Cardiff South, Coorangong, Eleebana, Glendale and Kahibah.

Seven were detected in the Newcastle LGA – two in Hamilton South, one apiece in Adamstown, Elermore Vale, Merewether, Newcastle and Shortland.

Residents in Cessnock and Cliftleigh were listed in the Cessnock LGA, while two were in the Maitland LGA – East Maitland and Thornton.

Worryingly, the Muswellbrook LGA – with the lowest vaccination rate in the state – posted two as well.

Further infections occurred in the Port Stephens (Medowie) and Mid-Coast (Possum Brush) LGAs respectively.

Twenty-one are linked, 13 were infectious in the community, and a dozen remain under investigation.

Overall, NSW amassed 1,063 locally-acquired cases in the 24 hours to 8pm last night.

It brings the total number, in the state, since the beginning of the pandemic to 55,773.

NSW Health reported the deaths of six people with COVID-19 – four women and two men.

Three were from western Sydney, two from south-western Sydney and one was from Dubbo.

Of those who died, four were not vaccinated.

One person – a woman in her 90s – had received a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and another – a woman in her 50s with significant underlying health conditions – had received two doses.

A woman in her 90s from Dubbo passed away at St Mary’s Villa Aged Care Facility in Dubbo where she acquired her infection.

This is the fourth death linked to an outbreak at this facility.

There have been 266 COVID-19-related deaths in NSW since 16 June 2021 and 322 in total since the start of the pandemic.
