SHARE

COVID-19 case numbers continue to decrease in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD), with 736 new infections detected overnight.

It’s a drop of 149 in the past 24-hour period.

The HNELHD registered 573 rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 163 PCRs.

There are currently 35 people receiving care in hospitals across the region, with two of them in intensive care units.

Meanwhile, there were 4,916 positive cases throughout the state as of 4pm on Sunday 20 February, including 3,657 RATs and 1,259 PCRs.

Sadly, NSW Health reported the deaths of seven men with COVID-19.

One was in his 60s, two were in their 70s, three were in their 80s and one was in his 90s.

Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

Five of the men had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and two were unvaccinated.

The fatalities occurred in western Sydney, northern Sydney, Sydney’s Inner West, Central Coast, the Hawkesbury, Mid-North Coast and Riverina regions.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,841.

NSW Health is also encouraging everyone who is eligible to receive a vaccination or their booster dose to book into a clinic or another provider.
