Couple celebrate ‘a very Newcastle wedding’

Tonyka and Cameron Luxton were determined to showcase their favourite city from almost every angle when they held their October 15 nuptials.

From the pre-ceremony city loop tram to the late-night get-me-home Newcastle Light Rail ride – there was barely a prominent landmark in the CBD that didn’t feature on their wedding itinerary.

Dating since 2018, the pair had been planning the celebrations for three years.

Proud Novocastrians they dreamt of including transport, beaches, parks and historic buildings in their wedding photos.

With impeccable timing they managed to dodge lockdowns, gathering restrictions, floods, La Nina downpours or any other ‘unprecedented’ events being witnessed of late.

After exchanging I-Dos at an early afternoon ceremony at Christ Church Cathedral, the pair travelled with its bridal party to Newcastle Beach to capture the occasion on film.

Blessed by the weather gods not only was the sun was shining, but the popular coastal haunt was filled with beachgoers endeavouring to soak up some rays.

Dressed in a floor-length ivory satin gown and standing beside her new husband who was looking dapper in his new suit, Tonyka was inadvertently stealing the limelight.

The couple received cheers and honking throughout the afternoon.

However not everyone thought a bride and groom deserved to be the highlight of the iconic location.

“Three Irish ladies came over to us while we were sitting down having a rest and they asked Tonyka to take a photo of them – that was pretty funny,” says Cameron.

A walk across Foreshore Park to Customs House meant the collection of Newcastle landmark wedding pics continued to grow throughout the afternoon.

And, after happy snaps in Civic Park, it was time to settle in for celebrations in City Hall.

By the time they reached the close of the evening Tonyka and Cameron boarded the Newcastle Light Rail together with a third of their wedding guests still in-tow.

They were heading for the Quest Newcastle Apartment Hotel.

Despite the carriage being packed with Saturday night revellers heading home after Jersey Boys or the Newcastle Jets close win against Perth Glory, a friend captured a timeless photo that shows nothing distracted the groom from his bride.

“I love this photo,” Cameron said.

“There we were in this enclosed space, just Tonyka and I, and no one is looking at us. It’s like it was just the two of us.”
