Countdown on to Supercars finale

The Newcastle 500 has quickly cemented itself as one of the premier events on the Supercars calendar, according to Holden’s Dave Reynolds.

The Penrite Racing spearhead is the most successful driver in the event’s short history.

In four races at the street circuit, Reynolds has placed fifth, third, second and first to collect the biggest points haul so far.

“I love driving the track,” he said.

“There’s nowhere you can have a little break down the straights because you’re constantly turning and the walls are super, super close and some of the parts of the track are really high speed and really rough, heaps of bumps.

“The car is moving around, dancing all the time.

“You have to be on top of your game there.

“Besides the track, I actually love the city – they put on a really good show, they support it really well.”

Reynolds joined fellow Supercars driver James Golding in Newcastle last week to celebrate the 100-day countdown to this year’s event.

The duo boarded the historic William the Fourth ship at Honeysuckle and enjoyed a visit to Treetops Adventure Park at Minmi.

Reynolds is currently sixth in the Supercars Championship standings, while Golding lies in 19th, ahead of the OTR SuperSprint at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia this weekend.

New Zealander Scott McLaughlin has a 433-point lead over Fabian Coulthard at the top.

After South Australia, the season moves on to Auckland, before arriving at Bathurst in October, then the Gold Coast, and Sandown International Motor Raceway in Melbourne.

The championship wraps up in Newcastle from 22 to 24 November.

More than 162,000 fans were reported to attend the 2018 edition.

Tickets are still available to purchase, including access to the event’s Saturday night concert featuring KISS and The Screaming Jets.
