The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by City of Newcastle (CN) to rename a reserve in Tighes Hill.
GNB chair Narelle Underwood said a proposal was in place to change the moniker of Islington Park to Tighes Hill Peace Park.
“We want to give everyone an opportunity to be heard and provide their opinion on this suggested name,” she explained.
“Engaging the local community is important in considering the proposal.”
The closing date for submissions will be 14 May.
The Hunter Peace Group requested CN to back the 2017 United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (the Treaty) and to endorse the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Cities Appeal campaign, which is aimed at building support and awareness for the Treaty.
Council subsequently supported the application to name the reserve Tighes Hill Peace Park.
“I understand the proposed name aims to recognise the City of Newcastle’s long and proud activist history in the fight for nuclear disarmament and the pursuit of world peace,” Ms Underwood said.
The park is located east of Maitland Road with Styx Creek to the south and Throsby Creek to the east.
The remainder of the reserve south of Styx Creek will continue to be known as Islington Park.
Now, the GNB is encouraging feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name.
Suggestions for alternative names is not being sought at this time.
