Cooks Hill Surf Club’s Patrol 3 lifesavers call it a day

Between them they have 431 years’ experience in keeping the ocean on and around Bar Beach safe for watergoers.

Their presence has no doubt saved countless numbers of lives.

So, when Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club Patrol 3 retires this week, it will mark the closing of an extraordinary chapter.

The patrol’s 11 members share everyday names like Wayne and Bob, Peter and Greg, but this is not an ordinary feat.

As members of one of Newcastle’s longest-serving volunteer surf lifesaving groups, the set will say farewell to active duty after providing an average of 39 years’ service to the local community.

Their retirement, says Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club president Michael Clancy, marks the end of an era.

“It’s with tremendous pride that we say farewell to Patrol 3,” he said.

“Their dedication to keeping the community safe and their unwavering commitment to the club over the years has been nothing short of exceptional.

“They will be deeply missed.”

With an average age of 62, Patrol 3’s contribution to the Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club has been invaluable.

“The patrol members have been an integral part of the local community, fostering a sense of safety and camaraderie among both fellow club members and beachgoers,” Clancy adds.

“The retirement of Patrol 3 is a reminder of the significant impact that volunteer surf lifesavers have on our coastal communities.

“These individuals give their time and energy to ensure the safety of others and as such deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.

“The Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Patrol 3 for their many years of service and dedication to the club and the community.

“Their legacy will live on in the countless lives they have touched and the memories they have created.

“We wish them all the best in their futures,” he concluded.
