Construction is officially underway on the new highly-anticipated Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation facility.
To be built on the Maitland Hospital campus at Metford, the new 64-bed building will deliver specialist rehab and forensic services for adults, integrated with the broader amenities already located on the site.
The purpose-built premises features single bedrooms with private ensuites, creating a safe, supportive and contemporary environment designed to help people on their recovery journey; as well as light-filled courtyards and communal living areas; sensory rooms and indoor and outdoor therapy spaces; therapeutic gardens and walking paths.

“Our staff is looking forward to relocating to the Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation facility,” Hunter New England Mental Health services executive director Dr Anand Swarmy said.
“We’re also looking forward to working with the building team as the project, expected to be completed in 2028, starts to take shape.”
Once complete, several health services currently located at Morisset Hospital will relocate to Metford.
The project is part of the NSW Government’s? 700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program, which is increasing the number of inpatient beds across the state, including regions like Tamworth, Broken Hill and the Lower Hunter.
“This is a huge milestone for Maitland and the wider Hunter… and it’s fantastic to see construction starting on this important mental health facility,” Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison said.
“Over the coming months, our community will see this modern, purpose-built centre take shape – delivering the specialised care and support people need closer to home.
“This facility will provide a safe, therapeutic and contemporary environment designed to support recovery and rehabilitation for people living with mental illness.
“The Labor government continues to invest in the infrastructure our regions deserve, ensuring people across the Hunter can access high-quality mental health care in a setting that supports their recovery and wellbeing.”
