Competition dragged into Newcastle

Novocastrians are in for a treat this weekend when Timberlina’s Drag Off kicks off on Sunday night.

The competition will see drag artists from across the city come together to compete for the crown, with the winner set to take home $3,000 worth of prizes.

“It’s going to be a big surprise, there are three rounds, one all about costumes, another improv round where they’re given a word and have to come up with a five minute skit and the last round is a final performance which is usually a really big over the top performance,” Timber Productions’ Timothy Jackson aka Timberlina said.

Timberlina’s drag off started last year as part of the Newcastle Pride Festival.

“The grand final was the closing party for the festival and we through that was it but now it has stuck around and we’re turning it into an annual event,” Timothy said.

“This year there is 14 competitors, so it is bigger than last year.”

To be COVID safe event numbers are capped but for those who miss out on tickets, the competition will be live streamed through Timberlina’s YouTube and Twitch channels.

Timberlina is excited for this year’s competition.

“Because of COVID we’ve changed the whole layout with a limited number of people in attendance and it is streamed over twitch,” Timothy said.

“We’re lucky with the venue because it’s pretty large but the event will be mostly virtual.”

The event hopes to continue to breathe life into the Newcastle drag scene, because of the pandemic it has taken a bit of a hit, but Timothy believed it will get back to what it was.

“We’ve lost all of our big shows in big venues,” he said.

“I have literally just gone back into the smaller venues with bingo shows and we’ve been doing online shows.

“For me it’s been really great but for other people it’s [been harder] because they didn’t have the technology to go online.”

The show is set to start at 7pm on Sunday 9 August at Platform 7 in Cardiff (33 Pendlebury Road, Cardiff).

Live tickets will be $20 each while others can tune in for free at twitch.tv/thetimberlina.

Heats two and three of the competition will run later in the month, go to Timberlina’s website for more information.
