Community-minded Jordan Fallon honoured at Cessnock

Community-minded Jordan Fallon is the deserving recipient of the Cessnock City 2022 Citizen of the Year award.

The announcement took place at council’s official Australia Day ceremony on 26 January at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre, with Ambassador Prue Watt OAM in attendance.

The Paralympian competed at London in 2012 where she secured gold in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m freestyle.

She also ventured to the Athens and Beijing Paralympics, where she picked up more medals.

“I’m delighted to be a part of Cessnock’s big day,” Ms Watt said.

“You can tell the people [here] are very proud of their community.

“And, so they should be.”

The Citizen of the Year, Mr Fallon, has dedicated a significant amount of time to preserving the local military history in the small villages of Kearsley, Abernethy and Elrington, ensuring residents remember and acknowledge the sacrifice of those who have gone before us.

Cessnock’s Young Citizen of the Year went to Isabella Metcalfe for her excellence in youth advocacy and leadership, as well as her extensive history of volunteering.

Branxton’s Michael Lowing took home the Senior Citizen of the Year title for his dedication to community.

He is the “go-to person” in Branxton and continues to build pride in the local area via a range of wonderful initiatives.

A special citizenship ceremony also greeted Cessnock’s newest Australian citizens Shital Deo Barman, Jane Carberry, Michalle Hoevers and Naomi Windsor.

Cessnock City mayor Jay Suvaal said it was a privilege to be part of the awards and citizenship services – and congratulated everyone involved.

“We are so lucky to live in a community with so many incredible people who make significant contributions to make our local government area (LGA) a better place to live,” he stated.

“This year there were 12 award recipients and each one is extremely deserving of recognition.

“I would like to thank each and every one of them for all that they’ve done for our community.”
