A strong community campaign, led by a concerned parent, has saved two Samaritans Early Learning Centres in the region at the 11th hour.
Two months ago, Lower Hunter mother Joanna Atkinson started a petition when she was informed the all-important facilities at Woodberry and Newcastle would close at the end of term 4 on 20 December.
She also contacted Hunter MP Dan Repacholi, Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon, Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison, Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery and Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold to air her grievances.
At the time, it was understood Samaritans made the “business” decision to shut the Lawson Avenue and Darby Street services to redirect resources to its core programs targeting youth and those in need, despite being in operation for more than 15 years.
That move upset Ms Atkinson, whose children (Violet and Avril) attended the Woodberry centre, and numerous other residents.
“If Samaritans can’t support it financially, that’s fine,” she said in August.
“However, I’d like a council to take it over.
“Apparently the building is council-owned, Samaritans leased it off them.
“So, someone else – even a franchise or local company – can step in.
“Whoever’s name is on there, I don’t care.
“It’s about keeping the staff and the service.
“It would be a smart move because it backs onto the family support services as well.
“Plus, it definitely meets a future need, especially with this area expanding.”
Ms Atkinson got her wish on Friday 4 October.
Samaritans successfully secured the future of both centres, after transferring the operating licence of them to childcare provider Sera Direct Pty Ltd.
Tenancy agreements are being arranged by landlords, City of Newcastle and Maitland City Council.
“Samaritans carefully considered a number of proposed operators, both not-for-profit and for-profit organisations,” a spokesperson said.
“The decision to transition to Sera Direct Pty Ltd was based on assurances children and staff will be able to continue at the centres if they wish to stay on.”
While Samaritans will still cease operations on 20 December, the centres are expected to reopen under the new operators in January 2025.
