The Coalition is already promising to resurrect Business Connect if it returns to power at the next state election.
It appears the NSW Government-funded program, which delivers free, independent advice to small enterprises, will come to an end on 30 September.
Since 2017, the initiative has helped 60,000-plus business owners pivot during crises, scale up and keep staff employed; created more than 40,000 new jobs; and returned up to three times its cost back into the economy, according to an NSW Treasury review.
But, Labor’s decision to axe Business Connect isn’t popular, especially after Minister for Small Business Jenelle Saffin told owners to “Google” the answers to their challenges.
Her comment came during Budget Estimates last week.
She also pointed to search engines as a source of support for operators.
“Remarks like these highlights just how disconnected the government is from the day-to-day realities small businesses face,” Realise Business advisor Wayne Wanders said.
“Business Connect is not a luxury – it’s a lifeline and cutting it now is reckless.
“I’ve delivered nearly 1,200 hours of advice to 480 different businesses in just the past two years.
“To suggest we can be replaced by Google is insulting.
“Sure, Google gives you information.
“However, the real skill lies in understanding what’s relevant, what applies to your unique situation and what the next step should be.
“[Today], I worked with a business owner weighing up whether to remain a sole trader or form a company.
“Google’s answer: ‘Neither a sole trader nor a company is inherently better… consult with an accountant or a business advisor’.
“Even it says small businesses need professional advice – not search results.”
The Business Centre Newcastle CEO Steve Wait was also concerned by Ms Saffin’s observations.
“Small businesses are the backbone of the NSW economy,” he said.
“But, they aren’t looking for search results… they’re looking for real solutions.
“Telling them to ‘Google it’ after cutting the one program that delivered those answers is like cancelling lifesaving GPS navigation and handing out a tourist brochure instead.”
The NSW Liberals and Nationals have now pledged to reinstate Business Connect.
“We’ve committed to bring it back while the Minns government has doubled down on its decision to cut this vital service,” Shadow Minister for Small Business Tim James said.
“And, while the Minister thinks Google is the answer for small businesses, the truth is, there’ll be nothing to replace Business Connect.”
