Melbourne City spoiled the party with a 4-0 thumping of Newcastle in veteran Jets defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley’s 300th A-League game.
City hit the front in just the 3rd minute when an inch-perfect pass found playmaker Adrian Luna, who slid the ball past Newcastle goalkeeper Glen Moss.
The visitors then doubled their lead just as the Jets were beginning to look dangerous.
Josh Brilliante clipped a clever cross into the six-yard box in the 28th minute and it was headed home by Luna.
Any chance the Jets had of a comeback was snuffed out early in the second half when Javier Cabrera fired a powerful shot past the helpless Glen Moss.
Cabrera then turned provider as his low cross was swept into the bottom left corner of the net by Jamie Maclaren.
It was the striker’s 10th goal of the campaign in just six matches, making him the fastest to double figures in A-League history.
Newcastle now sits in second last place on the ladder after two straight defeats.
The Jets will travel to Perth to face the Glory this Saturday 21 December, before returning home to tackle Brisbane.
