City of Newcastle celebrates significant milestones

The new year is only a couple of months old and we’re already celebrating significant milestones at City of Newcastle.

We’ve welcomed swimmers back into the water at the Newcastle Ocean Baths and officially opened the multi-million-dollar grandstand at Lambton War Memorial Swimming Centre, providing plenty of options for people looking to beat the heat.

The foundation stone for Newcastle Art Gallery’s expansion has been unveiled as work on the landmark infrastructure project continues, while new figures show Newcastle is leading the way in the supply of housing in the Hunter, with the third highest number of building approvals across the state.

These developments are just the beginning of a big 2024 for Newcastle.

Gallery work lays foundation for cultural tourism boom

The expansion of Newcastle Art Gallery has taken another step forward with NSW Arts Minister John Graham unveiling the foundation stone.

It follows the installation of a 33-metre-high tower crane on site to facilitate the next stage of construction.

This offers a home to one of Australia’s most significant art collections.

Minister Graham joined Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon, Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation chair Suzie Galwey and myself for the official ceremony, unveiling the bluestone paver to commemorate the major funding partners involved.

The expanded gallery will become a regionally-significant cultural destination.

By more than doubling the size of Newcastle Art Gallery and delivering a suite of modern facilities of international standing, this project will offer a home to one of Australia’s most significant art collections.

The expansion project includes an additional 1,600 square metres of exhibition space with dedicated areas for the Gallery’s collection on the lower level, while the upper level will cater for a variety of travelling exhibitions, including international shows.
