Citizen’s arrests following police pursuit in Rutherford

SHARE

Residents of a Rutherford street performed two citizen’s arrest earlier this week after a young person allegedly stole a motor vehicle.

The vehicle was parked in the owner’s open garage with the keys in the ignition, when it’s alleged the young person entered the garage and reversed the vehicle out, colliding with the owner’s letter box.

A neighbour witnessed this and alerted the owner.

A short time later, it’s claimed the now driver of the stolen vehicle allegedly picked up two friends and drove around Rutherford and surrounding suburbs, with all three taking turns to drive.

Police saturated the area in an attempted to locate the young persons due to the dangerous nature of their driving and their inexperience behind the wheel.

Police observed the vehicle in Aberglasslyn and tried to pull it over, but say the young person continued to drive the vehicle.

Shortly after it collided with a trailer that was parked on the street in Rutherford, shunting it 15 metres into the front yard of a home, significantly damaging the trailer and car.

Several residents witnessed the crash and managed to nab two of the car’s occupants, holding them until police arrived a short time later.

Two young persons were taken to Maitland Police Station where the main offender was charged with several offences including steal motor vehicle and police pursuit.

He is currently bail refused awaiting an appearance in East Maitland Children’s Court.

The third male remains unidentified. Investigations are continuing.
