Cibilic upsets Callinan in Newcastle Cup quarter-final

Merewether young gun Morgan Cibilic has claimed another big scalp in the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup presented by Corona, eliminating fellow Novocastrian Ryan Callinan from the World Surf League (WSL) competition.

The Championship Tour (CT) rookie, who knocked out No. 1 John John Florence earlier in the week, upset his more experienced rival in this morning’s (10 April) quarter-final – moving one step closer to a maiden CT title.

But, the showdown wasn’t without controversy, with many experts questioning the judges’ scoring in the three-to-five foot surf at Merewether Beach.

Cibilic registered 3.00, 0.50, 3.67, 0.30, 4.67 and 5.70 from his six attempts – for a two-wave total of 10.37 (out of 20).

Callinan also recorded 10.37 – following efforts of 5.50, 1.97, 4.83, 0.50, 4.17 and 4.87.

However, Cibilic progressed to the semi-final with the highest-scoring wave of the heat – a 5.70.

His next opponent is Brazilian legend Gabriel Medina, who beat countryman Adriano de Souza by a mere .20 of a point.

Cibilic stunned onlookers on Thursday (8 April) when he accounted for Florence, teaching the two-time WSL champion a lesson or two at his home break.

Following a foot injury, it was thought that Cibilic might withdraw from the event as he was unable to walk.

But, to everyone’s surprise, he fought through the pain of his toe fracture to score an excellent 17.13 two-wave total (out of a possible 20) to Florence’s 13.16 combined tally.
