Can you say you’ve tried goat’s milk gelato?
Now on Newcastle’s Darby Street, you have the chance.
Ballimore Farms Creamery, run by partners Alex and Brad, started as a farmer’s market stand and rose to popularity after winning ice cream, gelato and sorbet awards in Queensland.
And, just recently, they served more than 600 cones on their opening day.
The gelato is made from goat’s milk from their Seaham farm and the absence of proteins found in cow’s milk makes it suitable for people who are sensitive to lactose.
“We had a lady who was so excited that she could have all the product,” Alex said.
“That made me so happy.
“There’s a bit of science behind what we feed the goats.
“The sugars of the grass come out in the sweetness of the milk,” the third general farmer added.
“We try to use high-sugar grasses and it doesn’t affect the animals at all, except for its higher protein content.”
Aside from the creamy chemistry that it takes to bring farm-to-cone, the journey to Darby Street wasn’t easy.
But, with a supportive community of other Newcastle farmers, Alex and Brad have been able to achieve their dream.
They’ve joined forces with two other suppliers, Camden Valley Farm jersey cow’s milk, and Leaning Oak sweet cheeses.
Even the shelves in their Darby Street store have been built by friends and family.
“I think that’s how the small producers, nowadays, can do things a little differently,” Alex said.
“You have to have an amazing team around you to make these businesses work.”
