The initial step in the major restoration of Newcastle’s Christ Church Cathedral is done and dusted… with more work on the horizon.
Originally a modest convict-built place of worship in 1817, the present Gothic Revival structure – perched on The Hill – was designed by architect John Horbury Hunt.
But, following water ingress, salt damage and an ageing infrastructure, it’s in the middle of a multi-million-dollar upgrade.

Anglican Bishop of Newcastle Dr Peter Stuart joined representatives from construction company Duratec to mark the latest milestone.
“For many of us involved in this project – myself included – this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be so closely involved with work on a building of this significance to our community,” he stated.
“Three of the external roofs have been completed.
“Work is on track and we are excited to see the project progressing.
“For 175 years, Christ Church Cathedral has been the religious, spiritual and cultural heart of Newcastle.
“This restoration will enable it to remain that way for generations to come.”

To celebrate the venture’s progress, a new trefoil cross will be installed in the near future – weather permitting.
It represents the Holy Trinity and, once fitted, will be part of Newcastle’s iconic skyline moving forward.
Bishop Stuart said the cross was a remarkable example of the craftsmanship being used throughout the restoration process.
“Often the intricacies that we are seeing are hidden away and not always apparent,” he explained.
“The redevelopment of the cross showcases the commitment we have to ensuring the restoration is like-for-like and meets Heritage NSW requirements.
“Situated on top of the Warriors’ Chapel, it will be a great memorial to those who fought in the First World War.”
The trefoil cross was constructed by copper artisans using traditional techniques to maintain authenticity.
