Charlestown residents recognised for community service

Two Charlestown residents have been recognised for their contributions to the community as part of this year’s NSW Seniors Festival.

Local MP Jodie Harrison presented the 2026 Senior of the Year awards to John Hoskin and Jennie Brice during the annual celebrations.

Ms Brice, 94, was acknowledged for her decades of involvement with the Country Women’s Association (CWA).

A member of the Belmont branch since 1994, she’s held a range of leadership and patronage roles and continues to support the organisation through event duties and welcoming newcomers.

Mr Hoskin, 69, was honoured for his volunteer work with Westlakes Archers and his involvement in promoting the sport locally.

Since moving to the area in 2017, he’s mentored archery students at an international level and coordinated regular beginners’ coaching sessions for club members and the broader community.

Ms Harrison said the awards praised the contributions of older residents who continued to support community organisations and local activities.

“The NSW Seniors Festival is about celebrating the people who make our communities better places to live,” she explained.

“It was an honour to present these awards to two outstanding Charlestown locals who continue to give so much to others.”

Ms Harrison added volunteers such as Ms Brice and Mr Hoskin played an important role in strengthening community connections.

“Jennie and John’s dedication and willingness to volunteer their time is truly inspiring,” she said.

“And, it highlights how much seniors contribute to the strength and spirit of our local community.”

The awards were presented as part of the 2026 NSW Seniors Festival, which took place this month.

Now in its 68th year, it features events designed to celebrate and support older people while encouraging them to stay active and engaged in their communities.

Across NSW this year, nearly 50 government-run and sponsored activities took place during the festival.
