Transport for NSW (TfNSW) will target a number of projects, including the M1 Pacific Motorway extension, throughout the Hunter this week.
That means local motorists can expect to encounter several changed traffic conditions, from Beresfield to Hillsborough and Wallsend.
TfNSW thanks road-users for their patience during this time.
It comes as construction continues, from Black Hill to Tomago and Heatherbrae, from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday; 8am to 5pm on Saturday; and from 8pm to 5am Monday to Friday nights.
The work will also require lane closures and contraflow with intermittent stoppages and temporary speed reductions to 40km/h at the following locations and times:
From 8pm to 5am, on the nights of Monday 11 May until Friday 15 May
- M1 Pacific Motorway at Beresfield and Black Hill
- John Renshaw Drive at Beresfield
- New England Highway at Tarro
- Pacific Highway at Tomago and Heatherbrae
From 8am to 5pm, Monday 11 May until Friday 15 May
- Lenaghans Drive at Black Hill
- Old Punt Road near Pacific Highway at Tomago
- New England Highway Eastbound at Tarro
Operators of Over-Size and/or Over-Mass (OSOM) vehicles with a ground contact wider than 3.2 metres or with overall width greater than 4.5 metres are advised to contact the team on 0423 323 946 at least one day ahead of proposed movement.
Significant delays can occur if they fail to do so.
Hillsborough Road and Crockett Street intersection, Hillsborough
TfNSW is carrying out site establishment work in preparation for stage one of the Hillsborough Road upgrade.
It involves upgrading the Crockett Street intersection, including the installation of traffic lights.
From now until late 2027, a closure of the right turn lane from Crockett Street onto Hillsborough Road will be in place.
Motorists can use the Newcastle Inner City Bypass and Hillsborough Road roundabout to turn around and travel west towards Warners Bay, which is expected to add about seven minutes travel time during peak hours.
Traffic control, single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h is also operational for the safety of everyone.

Intersection of Maitland Road, Church Street and Nile Street, Mayfield
TfNSW will carry out the works, which includes maintenance to existing traffic lights and improvement to pedestrian protection and access at the intersection in Mayfield.
To minimise any impacts, it’ll take place as a mixture of day, from 7am to 5pm, and night works, from 7pm to 5am, from Monday 11 May until mid-June.
Blacked out signals, single lane closures, alternate traffic flow and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h are operational during this time.
So, please allow up to five minutes extra travel time.
Operators of OSOM vehicles are required to call ahead on UHF 27 to be directed through the site.

Newcastle Road at Wallsend
Maintenance is planned for Newcastle Road, between Victory Parade and Diana Street, Wallsend.
To minimise any impacts, it’ll be carried out on Monday 18 May between 8pm and 5am.
Traffic control, including a single lane closure, alternating stop/slow and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h will be in place.
There’s no right-hand turn, however, for motorists travelling eastbound on Newcastle Road into Douglass Street.
They’ll be detoured via The Cresent and Drury Street to rejoin Newcastle Road.
Douglas Street is closed between Newcastle Road and Marie Street, too.
Road-users will be detoured via Corindi Street, Alexander Street and Diana Street.
Operators of OSOM vehicles are required to call ahead on UHF 21 for access through the site.
