The Fred Hollows Foundation’s 2022 NSW Junior Ambassador Matilda Gibson is encouraging other local students to follow her lead.
The organisation has just begun its search for a new representative among Year 6 pupils in NSW as part of the 2023 Humanity Award.
The honour celebrates children who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives.
Whether it’s helping others, supporting good causes or volunteering, no act of kindness is too small to acknowledge.
Matilda, a student at St Philip’s Christian College, took out last year’s title after being nominated by her mother.
“She is a very caring young girl within her local community at Cessnock,” Mellissa said.
“In 2021, Matilda and her sister fundraised more than $2,400 for Ronald McDonald House – Dance for Sick Kids.
“Then, in December of that year, Maroba nursing home was in lockdown due to COVID and she hand-wrote Christmas cards to every person in the facility with a message of hope.”
Now, teachers, principals, parents and members of the community are all urged to nominate any Year 6 pupil who embodies a humanitarian spirit, just like Mr Hollows did.
“Fred used to say the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other,” founding director Gabi Hollows said.
“I’m constantly inspired by the actions of award recipients.
“And, I know Fred would be, too.
“I encourage people in NSW to nominate a Year 6 student who embodies the values of compassion, integrity and kindness.”
Since 2012, the Fred Hollows Humanity Award has recognised more than 2,000 pupils from across the nation, who follow in his footsteps by making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Recipients will be recognised at a virtual presentation ceremony in Term 4 of the school year.
A 2023 Junior Ambassador to the foundation will also be announced for NSW.
The Humanity Award’s charity partner Specsavers will generously donate $5,000 on behalf of this Junior Ambassador towards The Fred Hollows Foundation’s work globally to help end avoidable blindness.
Nominations, which close at 11.59pm on Friday 21 July, can be made at www.hollows.org/au/home
