To ensure Christmas is a little brighter for local families in need, Samaritans in Cessnock recently launched its Toy Appeal.
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented new and increased challenges for many residents.
And, as a result, the charity organisation is anticipating an increased demand for assistance this festive season, relying even further on the generosity of the community to provide gifts, particularly for the kids.
Cessnock Samaritans is collecting toys for children up to 12 years of age with donations of gift cards to the value of $20 kindly accepted.
A wide range of presents are required, such as sports equipment, beach towels, bags and books for youngsters between one and 12.
“This year, times are more uncertain than usual,” senior support worker Denise Crossley said.
“But, the Cessnock community is always extremely supportive.
“All donations that are received go to local families and we hope that everyone’s support continues again.”
Due to the current health guidelines, Samaritans is requesting all toys be in a new box.
Donations can be made directly to the Cessnock office at 124 Vincent Street during opening hours.
Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon said he was proud to get behind the charity in 2021.
“COVID-19 has meant it’s been a tough 12-18 months for many in the Hunter,” he stated.
“So, the Samaritans’ Toy Appeal will certainly help in making Christmas a little more joyful for those struggling families.
“Each year my team supports a local charity and, in 2021, we’re backing the Samaritans Christmas Toy Appeal by making our own personal contribution.
“I hope the community donates to them in the coming weeks, too.
“The Samaritans Christmas Toy Appeal and the service this organisation provides to those in need all year round is truly invaluable.
“And, I ask those who are able to, to give generously and help to spread the word.
I thank people in advance for making a difference this Christmas.”
All toy and gift card donations will be gratefully accepted at Cessnock Samaritans prior to 10 December.
