Cessnock state MP Clayton Barr has thrown his support behind the Fred Hollows Foundation, who’s calling for nominations for the inaugural Fred Awards.
The accolade is named after the late, great Professor Fred Hollows, who believed in the everyday humanitarianism of Australians.
The Fred Awards celebrate people who care for others in a decent, practical, and no-nonsense way, like Hollows did, and are an expansion of the foundation’s annual humanity honour, which recognises Australian Year 6 students.
Nominations are now open for the awards and the Fred Hollows Foundation is encouraging everyone throughout Cessnock to name someone who is making a difference in their community.
“Professor Fred Hollows was a great Australian who led with kindness, compassion and integrity,” Mr Barr said.
“Now, the foundation is searching for someone in the electorate who embodies these values and makes positive contributions to our community.
“Whether it’s the friend who’s constantly taking part in charity challenges, or the local who regularly volunteers in their spare time, Cessnock residents are making a tremendous input.
“And, the Fred Awards is a great opportunity for them to be recognised.”
All nominees will receive a certificate and be acknowledged at a virtual presentation ceremony, hosted by Foundation Ambassador and long-time friend of Fred Hollows, Ray Martin, and founding director Gabi Hollows AO.
Award nominees must be an Australian resident, aged 18 years or older, and demonstrate kindness, compassion and integrity.
“Fred used to say the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other,” Gabi Hollows said.
“He would be so proud to know the Fred Awards are recognising those who are demonstrating this belief in their own lives.
“I am constantly inspired by the everyday humanitarianism that I see in my community.
“So, I urge people to nominate someone in their area who embodies the values of compassion, integrity and kindness.”
Nominations close at 11.59pm on Friday 23 July.
