Cessnock residents are being asked to help shape the region’s road safety priorities, with Council’s draft Road Safety Plan 2026-2030 now open for public feedback.
The plan will guide Council’s road safety education, infrastructure and other initiatives over the next four years.
The plan aims to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities across the Cessnock local government area.
The draft is based on local road safety data and follows the Safe System approach used in national and NSW road safety strategies.
It focuses on four key areas including, safer people, safer roads and infrastructure, safer speeds and safer vehicles.
The goal is to improve road safety through education, upgrades to high-risk roads and intersections, safer speed management and the use of vehicles with improved safety features.
Cessnock City Mayor Dan Watton said local councils were well placed to develop road safety measures that reflected the needs of their communities.
“Councils are uniquely placed to plan and deliver safety initiatives tailored to their community’s needs in order to reduce the risk of tragedy on our roads,” Mayor Watton said.
He said the plan was part of Council’s efforts to work towards eliminating serious injuries and fatalities on local roads.
General Manager Natalia Cowley said local data had helped Council identify where road safety efforts could have the greatest impact.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Ms Cowley said.
She said the plan would provide a framework for Council to work with residents, government agencies and other stakeholders to improve safety across the Cessnock area.
The draft Road Safety Plan is now on public exhibition for 28 days.
Residents can read the plan and make a submission until 5 October 2026.
Hard copies are also available to view at Cessnock City Council’s Administration Building and local libraries.
Feedback can be submitted through Council’s consultation website.
