Some might be lonely, others socially isolated or vulnerable.
Whatever the reason or situation, Belmont Neighbourhood Centre hosts a community lunch to bring people together on R U OK? Day, an annual event which encourages meaningful conversations and supports anyone struggling with life.
Belmont Neighbourhood Centre coordinator of communications and services, Chris Brown, said the free luncheon proved to be its biggest yet.
“This event is more about being social and out in the community environment,” he said.
“A lot of people who come to the centre might be a bit vulnerable, not have many friends, or be isolated.
“It’s about reaching out to people who are lonely or on their own.”
R U OK? Day promotes the not-for-profit organisation’s vision for a world where everyone is connected and protected from suicide.
In 1995, loveable larrikin Barry Larkin was far from okay.
His suicide left family and friends in deep grief and with endless questions.
Fourteen years later, Barry’s son, Gavin, chose to champion one question – ‘Are you OK?’ – to try and protect other families from the pain his endured.
Gavin realised a national campaign was needed to genuinely change behaviour and, from that, R U OK? was born.
Mr Brown said the initiative sent an important message.
“We played the story of R U OK? Day, where the idea came from, the story of its creator, and how it has grown,” he said.
“While it was mainly about enjoying each other’s company, there were a couple of people there with their own mental health challenges.
“A few mothers came along who had had their first child, which can bring its own challenges.
“We don’t have any formal program for parenting, but we just provide a space for them – we want them to know they can come and be with the community.”
Belmont Neighbourhood Centre hosts regular programs, including the men’s shed, a Habitat in Harmony Community Garden, first aid course, a toy library, University of the Third Age (U3A), and weight watchers.
