Celebrity chefs to headline Maitland Aroma

SHARE

Hunter celebrity chefs Reece Hignell and Steph De Sousa will cook up a storm at the annual Maitland Aroma coffee and chocolate festival this weekend.

The former MasterChef Australia contestants are set to host the Flavour Stage, with Steph conducting a cooking demonstration on Saturday 10 August and Reece on Sunday 11 August at Maitland Riverside Carpark.

Steph, a mother-of-four from Warners Bay who loves to cook with spices, will show festival-goers how to create Indian and Italian doughnuts; while sweet tooth cake baker Reece, who hails from Newcastle, plans to wow the crowd with mirror-glazed mousse.

Loyal MasterChef fans will remember Steph from the latest season of the Network Ten series, when she was eliminated in week eight after a pressure test involving a Black Forest Lune Croissant.

The previous year, in season 10, Reece made it to the pointy end of the competition before being sent home in week 11.

A little known fact is that the pair were both shortlisted for season 10, but only Reece was chosen, leaving Steph to return the following year for her time in the spotlight.

Through this process, Reece and Steph became good mates, both equally as proud to represent the Hunter Region.

“I would love to get it to the point where MasterChef felt like they couldn’t not put [someone from] Newy on the show,” Steph tells Newcastle Weekly.

“It’s such a great place to live and work, it deserves to be put on the map.”

Taking time out of their busy schedules – Steph with her imminent Indian meal kit and spices range launch and Reece with his cake brand reveal, among other upcoming events – the duo are thrilled to be involved in the Aroma festival.

“As someone who loves sweets, it’s right up my alley,” Reece adds. “I’ve been coming to Aroma for years, so something like this is not just a job for me.”

The festival will feature an array of delectable chocolates, mouthwatering desserts and some of the best coffee produced by regional coffee roasters.

There will also be live music, a cocktail bar, interactive coffee art, cork coaster making and a pop-up library, while The Levee Shared Zone will come alive with vintage cars, ranging from Mustangs to MG’s.

The festival runs from 10am to 4pm both days. Visit maitlandaroma.com.au for further details.
