Celebrate Halloween in a COVID-safe way, say health experts

It’s widely known as an American tradition, but Australians have embraced Halloween with open arms in recent years.

Already businesses and retailers are gearing up for the onslaught of parents and children lining up for their scary outfits or colourful costumes.

However, COVID-19 – and the subsequent battle between the fully-vaccinated and those who opt against it – could put a dampener on celebrating the occasion throughout the Hunter in 2021.

And, with Halloween looming next weekend, on 31 October, NSW Health’s Dr Jeremy McAnulty is advising all residents to have fun in a COVID-safe way in line with the Public Health Orders (PHOs).

“Keep the celebration outdoors, go for treats that are packaged or individually-wrapped and do not use a communal lolly bowl,” he said.

“Families should also stick to their local neighbourhoods for trick-or-treating and be careful not to share costume masks.”

If you’re determined to go door-knocking in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland and beyond, heed Dr McAnulty’s warnings.

He suggested families should put their efforts towards decorating their front yards, instead of travelling further afield.

“We certainly want people to enjoy themselves, especially after what’s occurred over the past 18 months,” he said.

“However, do it as safely as possible.

“Most importantly, stay at home and don’t participate if you are feeling unwell with even the mildest of symptoms – get tested and isolate until you receive a negative result.

“If you are directed to do that, you must still follow the rules whether or not the venue or exposure setting is listed on the NSW Health website.

“It remains vital that anyone who has any symptoms or is a close or casual contact of a person with COVID-19 isolates and is tested immediately.

“When testing clinics are busy, please ensure you stay in line, identify yourself to staff and tell them that you have symptoms or are a contact of a case.”
