Cedar Mill amphitheatre capacity halved in updated plans

The highly-anticipated Cedar Mill amphitheatre in Morisset is confirmed to have its projected 30,000 capacity halved following intense speculation.

After sitting dormant for several months, owner company Winarch Group released a statement addressing the growing concerns about the development.

It verified plans for Cedar Mill would be subject to change, with authenticated paperwork to be submitted in April.

It comes after a spokesperson from Winarch Group denied potential changes after the initial speculation in 2024, stating the venue was expected to host large international acts including Metallica and Pearl Jam as soon as early 2026.

But, despite the optimism, many members of the public still grew wary.

Following further inquiries, a third statement was released, which confirmed a significant downsize was in order.

“Winarch Group is heavily-invested in the Hunter region, and we remain steadfast in our plans to deliver an entertainment precinct for the region,” said a spokesperson.

“Our updated plans include a 5,000-capacity outdoor amphitheatre in addition to a 10,000-capacity indoor venue designed to host family events, car shows, expos, and live music—ensuring a year-round destination for arts, culture, and entertainment in Morisset.

“We are confident that these enhancements will better serve the community, drive economic impact, and create employment pathways.

“We look forward to sharing more details in April.”

The Newcastle Weekly requested to speak with Winarch CEO Kyle McKendry, but has yet to receive a response.

It is still unclear whether the residential plans included within the redevelopment of the former Morisset Golf Course would be affected as well.

But, the Newcastle Weekly understands many members of the community and council are not happy with the sudden shift in the concept that was sold to them.
