Cauliflower Club laying down the rugby gauntlet in Maitland

The Cauliflower Club XV (CCXV) will bring its special brand of union to the Lower Hunter this weekend, laying down the gauntlet in Maitland.

The latest iteration of the inglorious CCXV is slated to meet the “new kids” on the Old Boys rugby block, Hunter Mildfires, at Marcellin Park on Saturday 16 March from 9am.

The Cauliflower Club was established in 2012 by former Wallaby greats Peter FitzSimons and Nick Farr-Jones to raise funds to provide sporting and recreational equipment to enhance and enrich the lives of those with a disability, with a bias towards sporting-related injuries.

And, for those less familiar with the great game of rugby, the charity is so named for its sincere adoration for the unsung heroes of the forward pack with their mangled cauliflower ears on the frontline of the battlefield… rather than their quicker, twinkle-toed brethren in the backline.

“The CCXV is an eclectic selection of hand-picked former rugby primates and Old Boys,” president Steve Adamson said.

“They’re backed up by a few half-handy ex-Wallabies as they pillage and plunder the veteran landscape in their pursuit of riches for their charity.

“The CCXV will also field a few familiar faces in Drew Weaver (Pokolbin Reds), Ben Emmett (Maitland Blacks), Luke Tressider (Merewether Carlton) and Paul Herrmann (Maitland Blacks).

“As the Hunter Mildfires Old Boys assemble on the paddock and attempt to let slip and cry havoc (apologies, Shakespeare…), they’ll be greeted by an onslaught led by former Wallaby and provincial greats Dean Mumm, Geoff “The Duke” Didier, Pat McCutcheon, Jeremy Paul and Mike Hayes.

“The legends will in turn be providing support to the true warriors of the paddock, broken down rugby heroes with more guts than greatness and such colourful monikers as Phantom, The Cube, Buddha, Fatboy, Temple, Taswegian, Rug, The Swagman – and a back called Maggot.

“With only two set moves in their arsenal but more props than a post-match buffet, the CCXV is sure to entertain both on and off the union pitch.

“Taking the reins of this motley crew will be a special guest coach.

“So, they’ll have their work cut out wrangling the squad into something resembling a rugby team.”

The CCXV also partners with the Australian Raptors Rugby Academy, who’ll attending on the weekend to stage a comprehensive Junior Skills n Drills Session.

It’s free and open to all local juniors and coaches in the region.
