Cambridge Hotel sold to developers

After nearly two years in limbo, the beloved Cambridge Hotel is officially in the hands of Newcastle property developers GWH.

The Newcastle West building has sat empty and defaced since closing its doors in June 2023.

Shortly after shutting, French developer Link City Lodge tabled plans for the space to become a 550-capacity student accommodation complex.

But, due to a lack of funds, the project fell through, putting the premises back on the market later the same year.

Newcastle real estate company Commercial Collective highlighted the venue’s hospitality potential, given its valid liquor and gaming licence.

Now, a year-and-a-half on, The Cambridge is receiving its long-awaited second wind.

Sold to GWH for an undisclosed amount of money, plans have already been made to revitalise not only venue, but the surrounding retail spaces as well.

According to a spokesperson, the downstairs section of the building will remain a hotel, utilising the poker machine and bar facilities.

Meanwhile, the upstairs accommodation will receive a much-needed facelift.

The neighbouring Forsythes building and car park are included within the developer’s proposal, too.

According to recent reports, GWH is currently working with City of Newcastle (CN) to establish a clear plan for the space.

Opened in 1958, The Cambridge Hotel has hosted an astonishing amount of local and touring artists, including The Screaming Jets, Silverchair, Tame Impala, The Presets and Blink-182.

Then, after operating for more than six decades, it was given a proper send-off with a three-day “Farewell Festival” in 2023.

The big blow-out took over the bordering street to create a world-class outdoor stage, accompanying its colossal indoor music facilities.

Aussie icons Peking Duk, Grinspoon, Gooch Palms, Dune Rats and 360 graced the stage for the last time, marking the end to a sacred era for live music in Newcastle.

Despite the excitement about the venue’s revitalisation, it is still unclear whether the venue will continue to station musical performances.

But, locals can rest assured the future of the Cambridge is going to be bright.
