Calvary Mater issued breach notices following maggot, mould issues

The drama-plagued Calvary Mater has been dealt two breach notices in the wake of several issues, including mould and maggots.

Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) handed out the formal warnings to Novacare Consortium after another ward had to be shut during the week, the second in 2026.

Earlier this month, the Waratah facility was forced to close a cancer unit due to a mould incursion in the air-conditioning system.

Then on Monday 19 January, it’s understood maggots fell onto patients in the haematology ward.

The situation forced the Private Public Partnership (PPP) operators to not only empty the unit but cancel surgeries.

Calvary Mater is currently addressing the contamination, which includes pest control and fumigation.

However, that hasn’t stopped NSW Health and HNELHD from taking action.

They’re keen to resolve the matters quickly and thoroughly.

“In relation to mould, HNELHD issued a breach notice – one of the strongest mechanisms available under the PPP contract – to Novacare [Consortium] to ensure remediation activities are completed to required standards,” the latter said in a statement.

“Novacare has advised HNELHD the remediation work will be ongoing over the coming months across the facility, as it will require replacement of mechanical systems and ductwork.”

Meanwhile, NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) general secretary Michael Whaites admitted the union was troubled by the detection of maggots.

“We are concerned by the latest developments at Calvary Mater Newcastle and are seeking urgent information from management,” he said in a media statement.

“We’re awaiting clarification of the source of the discovery and whether this was a result of poor integrated pest management within the facility.

“We are working with our members to ensure they are supported through this latest incident.

“It is important that all hospitals maintain high standards of hygiene including effective routine inspections, cleaning and maintenance to manage the risks of pest infestations.”
