The founder of Newcastle-headquartered mobility company BYKKO is in celebration mode this week.

Monica Zarafu was recognised as one of the best in the business, being named Innovator of the Year at the 2021 National Women in Digital Awards.

Her Australian green tech provider of electric bike-sharing and e-mobility systems are designed to reduce our reliance on cars as well as the carbon footprint.

BYKKO, who partners with state and local governments, helps plan and implement programs for residential developments and provides solutions for independent business operators and corporate fleets.

Ms Zarafu said it was a privilege to be acknowledged by peers, especially female leaders in the innovation space.

“The National Women in Digital Awards were based on the idea ‘you can’t be what you can’t see,” the managing director explained.

“The transport and mobility industry has very few female leaders, but I hope it becomes the space where women lead innovative solutions.

“Smart mobility is the transport of the future.

“So, hopefully, this award inspires the next generation to embrace opportunity to help solve global issues.”

The National Women in Digital Awards offer a platform for women to celebrate their achievements and an opportunity for the digital community to lift-up others in the industry.

The event’s judges said Ms Zarafu’s passion and ambition to solve real world problems using technology, alongside the exceptional user growth of BYKKO, was what saw her take out the 2021 Innovator of the Year.

“Monica appears to have a deep understanding of the electric bike industry and she has applied her knowledge effectively in the creation of BYKKO,” they stated.

“With mobility tech set to race ahead, her persistence in identifying shortcomings in the industry and developing an innovative technology-driven solution is sure to make her a winner now and in the future.”

Women in Digital is a global community dedicated to connecting, educating and empowering women in digital, offering a wide range of opportunities to help organisations push for greater diversity and encourage individuals to develop their career and stay at the forefront of all things digital.
