Buds score twice at Northern NSW Football awards

The Adamstown Rosebud Football Club (ARFC) scored twice in the 2021 National Premier Leagues (NPL) Northern NSW Football awards.

The “Buds” snared the Club of the Year and the Fair Play honours.

ARFC president Rick Naylor said the awards were recognition of the work by the club’s Board, coaches and other volunteers to manage the organisation and develop players on and off the field.

The Buds are the first football club in Northern NSW to partner with young people’s mental health organisation, Headspace, to provide resilience workshops to all players – in addition to sports nutrition, and usual physical and strength and conditioning programs.

Former club player Stuart Musialik, who went on to play for the Newcastle Jets’ grand final winning team and represent Australia, will be a mentor to players and coaches in the 2022 season.

Adamstown Rosebud Football Club president Rick Naylor.

“Adamstown Rosebud exists to provide opportunities for motivated footballers to further develop skills and reach their full potential,” Naylor said.

“Everyone at the club lives the ARFC values of collaborative effort, mutual respect, hard work and discipline.

“They get the ‘Adamstown way’ of developing and promoting our youth.

“We strive to be a club where there is a genuine development pathway – for players and coaches.

“We had five players, who have been with us since they were 12 years of age, make their first grade starting debuts in 2021.”

One of those young guns was 18-year-old Kyle Munns.

He took home the first grade Player of the Year and Golden Boot trophies at the club’s annual awards earlier this month.

The teen was one of 12 players to reach the milestone of playing 100 NPL games for the Buds this season.

Naylor said preparations for 2022 were well-advanced and teams were all but finalised.

Chris Dale will adopt the director of football role, a newly-created board position.

First grade coach Dave Rosewarne has been re-appointed and Chris Moylan is now technical director.

He said the club had exciting plans to install an all-weather synthetic training pitch next to Adamstown Oval.

“We’re currently applying for grants and fundraising to make the council-backed development a reality,” Moylan added.

“With lockdowns over and public health restrictions easing, players are returning to training this week in a safe way.

“We’re continuing our focus on resources to support coach and player development, in line with our football philosophy of playing in an entertaining way.”

ARFC has one of the longest histories of any Newcastle and Hunter sporting club.

In fact, it’s been serving players and the community since 1889.

In other NPL Northern NSW Football awards, Edgeworth striker Jeremy Brockie won the Graham Jennings Medal for Player of the Year.

Maitland striker James Thompson secured Players’ Player.

Former Newcastle Jet Ben Kennedy was named Goalkeeper of the Year, as his premiership-winning club Lambton conceded just 15 goals in 16 games.

Charlestown Azzurri’s Riley Smith also picked up two plaudits.

The former Newcastle Jets Academy player won Young Player of the Year as well as the Media Award.

Two mentors shared the honours with Lambton’s Shane Pryce and Maitland’s Michael Bolch both named Coach of the Year.

Edgeworth captured the Club Championship.
