Budget to kick-start Singleton to Muswellbrook road duplication

Nationals candidate for Hunter James Thomson concedes the duplication of the New England Highway from Singleton to Muswelbrook is long overdue.

That’s why he’s welcomed Monday’s announcement to fund planning for the project in the 2022-23 Federal Budget.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg will deliver the government’s financial blueprint on Tuesday 29 March.

But, it’s believed $8 million is going towards numerous preparatory aspects of the duplication, with planning works expected to start by mid-2023.

The news will be welcomed by the thousands of motorists who travel that section of the Hunter Valley daily.

“I’m sure this is music to numerous residents’ ears,” Mr Thomson said.

“So many people across the Hunter and greater Newcastle area use this stretch of road.

“Whether it be a miner travelling to work, a family heading out west for a vacation or a farmer linking up to the Pacific Highway from the north-west.

“This corridor is crucial for our future and the strategic importance this region plays in our nation.

“For the past 100 years of Labor representation, it’s projects like this duplication that haven’t had the advocacy needed to get off the ground.

“I’m committed to changing that.

“I am excited to be a part of The Nationals, who are getting things done for not only us, but for our kids, grandkids and the next generation.”

Mr Thomson said the announcement demonstrated the party’s commitment to building a better Hunter region.

“I’m proud to see The Nationals building the Singleton and Muswellbrook bypasses,” he added.

“We need projects that set our region up for the next 10, 20 and 30 years.

“And, these are examples of how we are driving ahead with our big vision for the future of the Hunter.”

Mr Thomson said he was also very pleased to know an additional $30 million had been allocated in this year’s budget for the Tenterfield to Newcastle corridor.

“These projects will create jobs, bring in new wealth and create more economic opportunities to underpin our standard of living,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

“Better roads mean workers get home to their kids sooner, businesses have access to the Port of Newcastle and people can get to our world leading wine and tourism areas quicker.

“If elected, I will continue to work with all stakeholders.

“We need to create a safer and stronger Hunter while we continue to build better roads for future generations.”
