Bromilow ‘proud’ to lead Knights’ historic NRLW campaign

Casey Bromilow admits he is “very proud and honoured” to lead the Newcastle Knights’ historic NRLW campaign.

Having spent almost five years as the club’s elite pathway programs manager, the respected and experienced mentor of the Tarsha Gale Cup side was this week appointed the team’s head coach, taking over the reins of Blake Green for the upcoming 2021 season.

The ex-NRL star was originally slated to oversee the Knights’ outfit, however delays to the start of the competition – due to COVID-19 and subsequent health restrictions – gave Bromilow the opportunity to step up into the fray.

“It’s super exciting to be appointed as the Knights’ NRLW coach,” he said.

“I’d love to thank Blake [Green] and Jess Skinner for the work they’ve done in bringing the squad together in the short-term leading into where we are now.

“They have done a great job.

“They’ve passed on a sensational playing roster and well-established programs.

“But, in saying that, I’m looking forward to having Jess back as an assistant.”

Bromilow previously played in the Queensland Cup and spent time in England as a player before taking up a prior role with Queensland Rugby League.

He led the Tarsha Gale Cup side to a minor premiership in 2021 and was integral in the development of several current squad members.

The Knights also unveiled seven Hunter-based girls – Bobbi Law, Caitlan Johnston, Jayme Fressard and Georgia Page will be joined by Chantelle Graham, Kyra Simon and Phoebe Desmond – in the inaugural line-up.

“It’s really exciting with the local talent we’ve got,” Bromilow said.

“Our goal is to develop them – and the rest of the side – as much as we can.

“We boast a very good core group of players and we’re really proud of what we’ve established.

“I’m pumped to get out there on day one to see what we can do against the Parramatta Eels, knowing the loyal Knights members will get behind the team and, in return, the side will do them proud in the red and blue jersey.

“I think we can give it (NRLW) a good shake from the opening whistle.”

Newcastle’s general manager of football Danny Buderus said the appointment was a natural progression for Bromilow.

“Casey’s knowledge of the women’s game made him ideal for the position,” he explained.

“He’ll be supported by Jess [Skinner] and wonderful new facilities at the Centre of Excellence, too.

“Having observed Casey’s coaching ability first-hand, combined with his enthusiasm and passion for the women’s game, he was the standout person for the role.

“We’re excited about the NRLW competition and what the future holds for women’s participation through our pathways.”

The first game of the season is scheduled for 27 February at McDonald Jones Stadium.
