Broke goes for gold as top tiny tourism destination

SHARE

After a two-year silver streak, the Hunter Valley’s best-kept secret is ready for its “golden” moment.

And, the residents of Broke are calling on the entire community to back their quest to achieve the highest accolade at the NSW Tourism Industry Council’s 2026 Top Tourism Town Awards (population under 1,500).

Tucked beneath the dramatic Yellow Rock escarpment of the Brokenback Ranges, the historic village is often described as a “hidden gem”.

However, locals and visitors alike know it as something more: a place to slow down, reconnect and experience the Hunter at its most authentic.

From boutique vineyards and cellar doors to world-class dining, arts, culture and country hospitality, Broke punches well above its weight.

Singleton mayor Sue Moore admitted the continued recognition as a top tiny tourism town highlighted its growing reputation as a standout regional destination.

“There are plenty of reasons to visit, from history and heritage to incredible food and wine experiences,” she said.

“We’re incredibly proud of Broke’s silver results over recent years.

“But, now, it’s time for the village to have its moment in the spotlight.”

Just two hours from Sydney and about 15 minutes from Pokolbin, Broke offers a different pace to the region’s busier wine hubs — quieter, more personal and all the better for it.

Visitors can dine at hatted restaurants, explore sculpture parks and galleries, meet alpacas and artisan producers, or simply take in the scenery by day and the five-million-star sky by night.

Importantly, judging for the awards relies heavily on public support.

Voting is open from now until 3 May.

“I’m asking everyone to please take a few minutes to cast their vote for Broke and highlight all the reasons they love this special village,” Cr Moore said.

“It has everything people are looking for — whether it’s a weekend escape or a longer stay to create lasting memories.

“Express your appreciation for this beautiful part of our local area and help show the rest of NSW why Broke’s spectacular scenery, premium wines, world-class dining, boutique accommodation and unrivalled experiences are truly worth gold.”
