Mike Collins is determined to support disadvantaged Cambodians, so they can break the cycle of poverty.
And, it’s one of the reasons the Broadmeadow athlete will use this weekend’s Newcastle Running Festival to raise awareness of their plight.
Collins will participate in the Sunday 2 April event as part of the Walk to Cambodia, where hundreds of people collectively walk, run, swim or ride from Australia to Siem Reap this month.
He’s hoping to contribute to the fundraising goal of $60,000 in 2023.
“I believe in supporting a local approach to international development,” Collins said.
“So, I’m encouraging Novocastrians to get involved – or donate.
“I’m doing it because it’s a fantastic cause.
“The Walk to Cambodia is run by volunteers, so all money raised goes directly to those who need it most.
“In 2022, I was blown away by the generosity of family and friends who donated more than $1,000 for my hard-earned 200km of running and swimming.
“Fingers crossed I can do better in 2023.”
The money will fund literacy classes, a pre-school, library, scholarships and sewing/farming training in Cambodia.
“These programs transform the lives of some of the poorest and most socially disadvantaged children,” Collins said.
Human and Hope CEO Sally Hetherington, the charity behind Walk to Cambodia, thanked the local’s contribution.
“We are very grateful that Mike is taking on such a fantastic challenge to help us fund our vital support to people in need,” she said.
“Human and Hope financially assists a grassroots community centre in Cambodia, which runs education, vocational training and community development programs that alleviate poverty.
“We also raise awareness in Australia about the unintended consequences of voluntourism and advocates for a local approach to development.”
The Walk to Cambodia takes place from 1 to 30 April… and participants can register now at www.walktocambodia.org
