Man rescued after boat capsizes on Lake Mac

SHARE

Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie volunteers were called to assist a man after a boat capsized in Swan Bay this afternoon.

The initial call for assistance was received by the unit on duty at the Pelican Base at approximately 1.30pm.

When crews arrived at the small hamlet off Marks Point, they found a man aboard a cruiser that was already partly submerged.

“It was decided by the skipper and volunteers that a pump out would not work as the cruiser is too far gone,” said Marine Rescue volunteer Garry Luxton.

The skipper returned to shore with the rescue volunteers.

“He was very wet and cold,” Mr Luxton said.

“He’d been onboard trying to secure the contents.”

Mr Luxton says as yet they were unaware of what had led to the incident.

“Swan Bay is protected from most bad weather, but this vessel has obviously taken on water,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

The rescue is a timely reminder to check in with Marine Rescue before heading out on waters.

It follows a rescue on Saturday 2 July in which a boat overturned in waters off Pirrita Island (formerly Coon Island).

The Bureau of Meteorology issued flood, hazardous surf and marine wind warnings for most of NSW this week.
