Big ideas in micro plays

It’s theatre, but not as you know it.

How can you fit drama, comedy, tragedy and even a little sci-fi into one night? The Micro Theatre Festival, that’s how.

Newcastle’s very own unique theatre festival will again stage four, bite-sized plays at three café venues, with 12 plays to catch in total.
This year’s venues include two newcomers – Birdy’s Café in Tighes Hill and The Bolton Street Pantry in the CBD.

Popular venue The Press Book House has returned to play host for another year.

Each venue dishes up its own vibe; Birdy’s oozes bohemia, The Bolton Street Pantry is city chic, and, when you step into The Press Book House, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d just teleported to a New York City underground scene.

“We’re very excited about this year’s festival; in a way, it’s a return to the festival’s origins, providing three different experiences across three venues,” festival director Kate Dun said.

“We received 43 [play] entries this year – one from as far away as New Zealand – and the calibre of script writing was high, making the final decision on the winning plays really tough.”

The Micro Theatre Festival is now in its fifth year, and, in keeping with the festival directors’ beliefs, they have announced a new award.

In addition to the usual accolades for best direction, scriptwriting and acting, this year there is also an award for bravery up for grabs.

“This award will go to the best play, writer, actor, or director who takes things to the next level, and surprises us,” Dun added.
“It’s an award that we hope will encourage creativity and also give our audiences something that will stay with them long after they’ve left the venue.”

The Micro Theatre Festival will be held from Thursday 23 May to Saturday 1 June.
