Big crowd steps back in time at Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival

SHARE

A massive crowd was on hand to step back in time at the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival at the weekend.

Despite competing against several events such as Warbirds Over Scone and the Newcastle Beer Festival, as well as a looming fuel crisis, big numbers still converged on Lang and Barton streets from Friday 27 March until Sunday 29 March, much to the delight of organisers.

There, locals and visitors alike were treated to classic cars and hot rods, fabulous fashions from the 1950s and ‘60s, entertainment, dance demonstrations, old-school market stalls, the much-loved Show ‘n’ Shine and, of course, plenty of rock ‘n’ roll music.

A vintage motorcycle display, featuring pre-1978 machines supported by Bikers for Kids; experts from Theodore Bruce Auctioneers and Valuers to appraise heirlooms; a Retro High Tea and a special screening of Grease at the nearby Heddon Greta Drive-in also added to the evocative atmosphere.

Even the kids had a lot to smile about, thanks to a plethora of rides, face painting and activations, making it the ideal family-friendly day out.

“Not only is the iconic Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival a great weekend of rock ‘n’ roll and antique vehicles, it’s a major driver of visitation and economic activity in the region,” Cessnock City mayor Dan Watton said.

“People travel from far and wide to be here.

“Importantly, it provides direct fundraising opportunities for local groups, too, helping strengthen the social fabric of Kurri Kurri and the wider Cessnock LGA.

“It’s an unmissable fixture on our calendar, so I’m pleased council played a leading role in ensuring it remains that way.

“Our thanks to everyone who supported the festival, including our major sponsor Snowy Hydro.

“The company already has a link with the LGA through its Kurri Kurri Power Station on the former aluminium smelter site.”
