Following an outstanding performance in the international arena, the Newcastle Chamber Choir will take the stage much closer to home this weekend.
The choral group, under the musical direction of Benjamin Lambert, is preparing to present A Christmas Concert at the iconic Christ Church Cathedral on Sunday 10 December from 2pm.
It comes off the back of a sensational result – winning two gold medals – at the 12th annual World Choir Games in Gangneung, South Korea.
Competing against more than 350 rivals, representing 46 countries, Newcastle was the only Australian outfit to qualify for the prestigious Champions competition in the mixed chamber choir and contemporary vocal ensemble categories.
“We’re delighted with the outcome,” Lambert said.
“The 25-voice strong Newcastle Chamber Choir is an auditioned group, which has gained not only a loyal and growing following in our hometown, but nationally, too, since our formation in 2019.
“We’ve won both the Sydney Australasian Eisteddfod and Australian National Eisteddfod on multiple occasions.
“We have also performed as guests of the Festival of Voices in Hobart and at the inaugural concert for the newly-appointed Governor of Tasmania, her excellency the honourable Barbara Baker AC.
“But, we’re equally keen to defend our gold medal success at the 13th World Choir Games in Auckland next July.
“Because the event is conducted every two years, the 12th edition was postponed due to COVID disruption.
“So, 2014 is the first time it’s being staged in this part of the world.”
The Newcastle Chamber Choir will now perform its award-winning repertoire this weekend for local music-lovers.
“Come sing carols alongside friends, supporters and followers as we join together in festive spirit,” Lambert said.
“From timeless Christmas favourites to modern choral works, our selection promises a harmonious balance of old and new.”
Doors open at 1.30pm, with tickets available at ticketebo.com.au/NCCChristmas2023
